Einn síðsumardag finna þýskir ferðamenn lík í Drekkingarhyl í Öxará. Það reynist vera af ungri stúlku af kúrdískum uppruna. Strax vakna grunsemdir um að þarna sé um að ræða svokallað heiðursmorð og grunur fellur á föður stúlkunnar. Hin eitursnjalla en kræfa Stella Blómkvist er kölluð á vettvang. Stella Blómkvist er söm við sig, eitilhress og harðsoðin, ratar vel um undirheima samfélagsins jafnt sem krókaleiðir valdakerfis og fjármálaheims og tekst óhrædd á við andstæðinga með spakmæli mömmu gömlu á vörunum.
